Sons Versus Daughters

Tonight my boyfriend Jeremy and I (with the devilish encouragement of Jack Daniels) encroached the precarious territory of whether we would prefer a son or daughter as our next baby. As we already have a son, I said I hoped for a daughter. He said he hoped for a son. His argument was that as our society is male dominated, our sons would succeed more than our daughters. To further prove his argument, he proclaimed that the most predominant people of society are male, such as doctors and lawyers. When I reminded him that the doctor who delivered our son is female, he countered with, “The Surgeon General is a man!” I challenged him to prove that point.

What we learned tonight is that the Surgeon General is a WOMAN. And that I get the last laugh.

Rules of Motherhood

Rule One:

Keep your hair up so baby can’t pull it out of your head.

Rule Two:

Keep your nails short so baby poop won’t get stuck under them. Lesson learned today.

Dear Hunter

Dear Hunter,

It’s been almost seven months since you gave up residence in my stomach in favor of exploring the world. Thank you for letting me tag along.

Recently you have grown four teeth and have found their function of biting things quite useful as you have taken to chewing everything you can get your hands on. Including, but not limited to, toys, Daddy’s phone, my cheeks and the dog, Ace. If I may be so bold, I would suggest not biting Ace, as he has sharper teeth than your own. He does, however, have a sweet temperament and has so far shown tremendous patience while you tug on his fur and bite his ears.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you grow up to be a Cave Diver, Pilot, Nascar Driver or a Lion Tamer. You are quite the daredevil; your favorite activities are the ones in which you can jump very high, swing through the air or throw your head back to see the ground far below you.

You have an infectious laugh that affects your whole body. Your mouth gets very wide and your eyes twinkle, your arms raised in elation as you chortle and scream. Your laughter is always genuine. I spend my day figuring out the best faces or noises to make you laugh and savoring it.

Hunter, you are the reason I wake up before the sun with a smile. I will always cherish you, through the good, bad, ugly and awkward. You are the reason I believe in love at first sight.

                                                       Love, Always and Forever,

                                                                     Mama
